If you have had unprotected sex, that is, sex without using contraception, or think your contraception might have failed, you can use emergency contraception. There are different types of emergency contraception: the emergency contraceptive pill Levonelle, the emergency contraceptive pill EllaOne, and the emergency intrauterine device (IUD). This leaflet provides general information about these methods of emergency contraception. Please note :- new guidance states that women should wait for five days after taking the emergency pill ellaOne before they start or resume hormonal contraception.
